REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURY : RSI

What is  Repetitive Strain Injury?

RSI describes a painful condition generally associated with doing a particular activity repeatedly or for  long periods of time it often occurs as a result of working with computers and typing or repetitive manual work.

The term RSI covers a number of muscle-related injuries.

Tendonitis: Inflammation of a tendon.

Carpal tunnel syndrome: Pain or weakness in your forearm or hand.

Rotator Cuff Syndrome: Shoulder/Neck Pain.

Tennis/golfer's elbow: Muscular pain in biceps and triceps.

Dupuytren's contracture. ( a condition that causes your fingers to bend up towards the palm of your hand.)

Writer's cramp: Cramp of your hand and fingers.

RSI has a wide range of symptoms including pain and tenderness in your muscles and joints.  You will probably notice symptoms most when you're doing the activity that caused them.

Symptoms that occur in your upper body include: a sharp or dull ache, stiffness, tingling, numbness, weakness, cramp.

The pain may get worse and become constant, even when you're resting. It may get so bad that you find you aren't able to do routine work or household activities, RSI can also be very painful at night when in bed.

 Please note: It is important to see your GP as soon as you notice any pain in a particular area that lasts for more than a couple of weeks.
